19th century. Batak, Sumatra Island, Indonesia.

Carved from a single tree trunk this grain storage container (Rhumbi) would be kept in the house, thus taking on decades of a sooty patina. The lid was clamped down using a stick that was inserted through the “ears” and the center figure on the lid.
The example was too large and heavy to remove for a proper photograph.
