2661: Woman’s Sarong with Beaded Panel. The beads were sewn onto the hand spun cotton sarong and continue around without breaks. The symbols are taken from Dutch royal emblems and used by the island aristocrats as symbols of status, authority, and a direct connection to the colonial power and Dutch Royalty. L: 61”, bead panel (one side): 14” X 20”. Early-mid 20th century. Sumba Island, Indonesia.
