TRAVELOGUE 8
Lembata Whaling

Our next stop is the village of Ilupi, where whaling is still done the old fashion way.
A man weaves a small square section from palm leaves to repair a large sail.
These large sails are made by weaving these smaller squares and then sewing them together.
Bamboo bellows are used to heat metal to make the harpoons.
One of the local whale hunters shows off his harpoon. These men have high status in the village.
A local craftsman shows a model of the type of boat used in whaling.
When whales are spotted by lookouts higher in the mountains, the village fleet rows out to sea.
Just off shore, the mast is pushed up into place.
Then the large sail is pulled up and the boats move out to catch up with the whales.
In this demonstration, closer to shore, the hunter stands on the bow, poised with his weapon. On close approach, he will leap off the boat onto the back of the whale and drive the harpoon in, before being pulled back to the boat by a rope tied around his waist.
