w7: Ceremonial Mask (Hudoq). Light wood, shells, pigments. H: 16" (41 cm), W: 15" (38 cm), D: 11.5" (29 cm). Mid 20th century. Unknown Kayan artist. East Kalimantan, Borneo Island, Indonesia.

This mask represents a hornbill, dragon, and ancestral form, morphed into one figure. The horn-like projections in the upper ear represent additional hornbill beaks. Masks of this type were usually used in agricultural or welcoming ceremonies. The condition is very good, but the original rattan hat (for holding feathers) is missing.
