3949: Altar Charm.

Unknown Dayak group (possibly Ngaju). West or Central Kalimantan, Borneo Island, Indonesia.
Hardwood. L: 10.5" (26.7 cm), H: 9.5" (24.1 cm), W: 4.25" (10.8 cm).

Rare large-sized charm or altarpiece, with male figure riding on the back of a tiger. The tiger represents a powerful
protective spirit meant to ward off malevolent forces, disease, and misfortune from a home or ritual setting.
The tiger represents the untamed, chaotic, and dangerous forces of the natural world, as well as the wild, untamed passions
within the human spirit. A figure riding a tiger symbolizes ultimate control and mastery over these powerful forces.
The tiger is sitting back with head raised up, which is not a natural, aggressive stance but is restrained, acknowledging
the rider's authority. It is a "tamed" power, not a broken one—its strength is now in the service of the master.

Ex: Jack Sadovnic collection, Caracas, New York, Bali, Brussels, Miami, Los Angeles.
