4572: Ceremonial Textile "Pua".
Iban Dayak. Sarawak State, Borneo Island, Malaysia.
Ikat dyed cotton. H: 85” (216 cm), W: 50.5" (128.3 cm).
Ceremonial textile with ikat dyed motifs of spirit faces, that alternate between wide
open eyes and closed eyes using the multiple mouths (with teeth) as additional eyes.
This is one of the most graphically dynamic Pua textiles I have come across.
These textiles were used to enclose a ritual space, hold offerings, and protect participants.
