brds3: Guardian Statue.

Ngaju Dayak (or related sub-group). Central Kalimantan, Borneo Island, Indonesia.
Hardwood, shells. H: 55" (139.7 cm), Full height with raised stand: 65" (165.1 cm).

Unusual wood sculpture depicting a standing guardian figure with a human body and the head of an animal,
possibly a canine figure or some other kind of jungle creature. The figure holds a crocodile to its chest. As
another powerful underworld creature, the crocodile adds protection and status to the statue. The animal head is
turned to one side, which gives the impression of constant vigilance, as it scans the area for malevolent forces.

Ex: Richard and Jan Baum collection. Los Angeles, CA.
