mjsg1: Backrest for a Royal Wedding Seat.

Kindom of Cirebon. Java Island, Indonesia.
Wood, pigments. H: 41” (104.1 cm), W: 52" (132.1 cm).

The original function of this panel was the backrest of a wood and rattan seat that was used to hold the royal wedding couple.

The panel is carved with images of three peacocks (symbols of royalty) and three decorated heirloom jars (symbols of wealth and status),
from which sprouts in each a complex and intricate botanical array of vines and leaves. These could also represent a stylized version of the
"Tree-of-Life", a common motif in Indonesia. The center peacock has an attached head that stands out in three-dimensions from the
two-dimensional artwork.

The low relief and open work technique highlight the delicacy and intricacy of the design, while the three-dimensional peacock adds a
dynamic and regal touch. The motifs of peacocks, heirloom jars, and botanical imagery embody themes of beauty, fertility, and spiritual
symbolize rooted in Indonesian animist traditions.

Ex: Jack Sadovnic collection, Caracas, New York, Bali, Brussels, Miami, Los Angeles.
