Adat House Roof Finial
INV. #4298
Flores Island, Indonesia.
Hardwood. H: 21.5" (54.6 cm), W: 9.5" (24.7 cm), D: 10.5" (26.7 cm).
A traditional ceremonial “adat” house finial, placed on the top of the central roof post. This is a complete piece and not a fragment.
The interior up to the neck is partially hollowed out to fit on the rounded top of the central roof post.
The sculpture shows a male figure carved in the round with a stern expression. He is wearing a single earring and a ceremonial necklace
holding a disc or dish-shaped chest ornament of the type often made from gold or silver. The chest ornament is shown hanging from the
necklace with the cord coming in and out in a way that gives the impression of a 3-D image.
