temple Figure

INV. # 4729

Bali Island, Indonesia.
Wood, pigments. H: 17.75" (45.1 cm).

A temple figure in the form Sugriwa, the king of the monkeys. It is possible this piece comes from the rural highlands area of Bali.
Vigorous and more stylized, their imagery is a combination of Hindu characters and a more tribal aesthetic rooted in traditions dating back to pre-Hinduism.
