Ancestral Figure (Tau-Tau)
With Figure Riding a Horse. Toraja, Sulawesi Island, Indonesia. Museum Collection, San Diego, California (exhibited in two other museum shows in California). The only known example of a Tau-Tau figure riding a horse. The figure is regal and clearly was meant to represent a regional aristocrat. The horse was original to the piece and the rider was carved to fit into slots on the sides. There was some interior damage to the horse as it was carved from a softer wood (the Tau-Tau are always carved from the dense heart of the Jackfruit tree), so much of the rotted insides was filled and restored.
