Ceremonial Canopy “Kandaure”

Toraja people. Sulawesi Island, Indonesia.
Glass seed beads, cotton threads. Full H: 53" (134.6 cm), Top Section H: 15.5" (39.4 cm), Max Dia: 11" (27.9 cm).
With a custom steel mount.

Beaded hanging with rows of ancestral figures in white at the top and abstract anthropomorphic figures around the main panel.
These pieces were status symbols usually displayed as canopies at the top of tall posts (similar to the modern mount shown in photos)
within the ceremonial area. Additionally, some were worn over the shoulders of female dancers with the motifs on the back and
the long beaded fringes interlaced around the front.
